Peasprout Chen is the best wu lie (martial art figure skating) student there is, or at least she hopes to prove that. But when she gets to the Pearl Famous Academy of Skate and Sword to prove she is, things go wrong from the start. All sorts of trouble starts happening and Peasprout gets blamed, even though it’s not her fault. But if she can’t find who is to blame, she will be forced to leave the academy and her dreams behind. Wu lie is this incredible combo of martial arts and skating. The fighting that is done on skates is incredible and even sounds beautiful at times. Peasprout is a very believable character and her passion to be number one is something other athletes will relate to. This one should keep students turning the pages and appeal to non-traditional sports fans as well as sport fans. Grades 5 and up.

Candice and her mom are staying in her grandmother’s house. In the attic of the house Candice finds a letter filled with clues to help solve an old mystery, one that deals with finding quite a bit of money. Solving the mystery won’t be easy but Candice is sure she can solve it with the help of her friend Brandon. This mystery flips back and forth between Candice & Brandon solving the mystery and the events that lead up to the letter with the clues. The backstory is filled with racism that was prevalent at that time in this small southern town and in areas around it. Readers will be drawn into their story and eagerly seek out what happened in their lives. In the middle of the book however,  it felt like there were almost too many subplots going on which slowed the story down and the momentum of solving the mystery along with it. Grades 4 and up.

This is an incredible Sci-Fi story. Teenager Spensa lives on a planet that is being constantly attacked by Krell (aliens). The planet’s only defense against them is to send up their own pilots to shoot them down. Spenca wants to become a pilot but her dad, a former pilot, left his squad and died a coward which is what the many people feel she will do if she becomes a pilot. She is determined to prove them wrong.Spenca is such a terrific, feisty character. She is  strong, flawed, creative, aggressive and carries a ton of baggage thanks to her dad; actions. Great battle scenes and strategies and revelations through out the book. Loved the humorous parts, especial from the AI named M-Bot. Definitely has sad parts and violence but well done and fits the situations. Sci-Fi is becoming very popular with my library with older readers and this one nails it. Fantastic read. Grades 6 and up.

Don’t Cosplay With My Heart

To cosplay is to dress up in the clothing of your favorite graphic novel or comic book hero or heroine, preferably homemade.  Edan is a total cosplayer for her favorite group, Team Tomorrow, and her favorite member, Gargantua.  When she dresses as Gargantua she is a giant with the power to accomplish anything.  In her real life her father is being accused of embezzlement, she is involved with a boy who may or may not be stealing from their Superheroes club called SEW, and another boy, Kirk, is taking up a lot of her interest.  This book is totally for the Nerd kids who are into cosplaying, love to go to Comic Cons, and are into costuming.  The ending comes too abruptly with the friends and staff members who had been so quick to believe that Edan had stolen the money, are now ready to be friends again.  The book will be a hit with the “Nerd” kids but will not have a universal appeal.  It is recommended for grades 9-12.

Leilani is obsessed with The Haileys, six popular girls at her school all named some variation of Hailey.  She is convinced that by inviting them to a sleepover she will instantly be “in.” Her best friend Amber is decidedly not a fan of this plan but stays quiet as is her way.  While creating her invitation list, Leilani also adds a column “to NOT invite” after of day of difficult encounters with her cousin, a girl she thinks is bullying her and a new neighbor who refuses to speak to her.   Asking her Hawaiian grandmother, Tutu, to help her mail out her invitations, Leilani’s carefully (and desperately) crafted plans quickly unravel. Thus begins the comical adventures of one crazy night, a group of not-to-be invited guests and a conniving grandmother all turning Leilani’s luau sleepover into a bust.  Tutu makes a batch of Sleepover Soup and leaves instructions that each person needs to add a special ingredient for a wish to come true. Leilani’s not-Hailey party head out on a scavenger hunt for items to add to the soup and find that despite not being friends before the sleepover that they are growing to appreciate one another.  A very honest look at how difficult it is to be a good friend and how many layers deep it may take to get to really understand one another. An excellent middle school story free of any cringeworthy cattiness.

The Vistors have arrived on Earth and with them sent an EMP eliminating all electronic communications. Sanjay and his best friends Chloe and Luis are in physics class when their High School goes on lockdown. Concern intensifies when Officer Mendoza and the teachers go missing. CAPP, a questionable local civic protection organization take over the school. As the trio look deeper into the situation they must decide if there is greater peril outside the school with the unknown alien Visitors or inside the school with the CAPP.

This action-packed novel is first in the Attack on Earth series written by Raelyn Drake has many aspects going for it. The writing is well done and thoughtful.  With only 10 chapters in the first installment, it is not overwhelming to those middle and high school students that are reluctant readers. The characters are relatable to teens and the reactions to the setting compel the reader to connect with them. Middle school, high school, and public libraries should consider adding the whole Attack on Earth series to their collections.

A lesson in kindness is taught with a science fiction twist for early readers in the adventures of The Jupiter Twins: Scout Trip To Saturn. Troop 552 is having a camping sleepover on Saturn. The twins Trudy and Tina are asked to have Polly share their tent, as she forgot hers at home.  Ugh. Why does Pesky Polly have to be with them? What they find out is that Polly is a gifted storyteller. To their surprise, her spooky campfire story might be true!

Easy-to-read text is well balanced on the pages with vibrant illustrations that bring the characters to life. Author Jeff Dinardo and illustrator Dave Clegg are a winning combination with this book series that will pair well with the upcoming summer reading theme of a “Universe of Stories.”  A great addition to both public and school libraries.

This is an excellent account of Howard Carter’s determination to find a royal mummy. Since he was a boy he worked toward this achievement. The author’s occasional use of light humor brings Howard Carter to life. He wasn’t always easy to be with because of his hot temper and terrible habit of neatness. He was also stubborn. The numerous colorful illustrations enhance this fascinating story. The illustrations are in perfect sync with the well written text. I highly recommend this non-fiction book for younger readers interested in mummies, archeology, and a captivating story of someone following their dream. There is an author’s note and list of sources.

This is a unique retelling of the Robin Hood story. Lady Silviana is the sister of John who becomes the sheriff of Woodshire. When he plans to have her marry Lord Danton “Silvie” runs away to the forest with her childhood friend, “Bird.” They soon form a group with Little Jane, Mae Tuck, and others. Mae Tuck is a midwife which is convenient for Little Jane’s sake. The cast of well developed characters is an interesting mix. The novel follows some of the Robin Hood story line with a few twists. It is well written with beautiful descriptions of the forest. The plot moves quickly and the timeless themes are easily recognized. There is a grisly scene toward the end which is not for the faint of heart. Mature readers will enjoy this variation of the Robin Hood story. An author’s note is included.

Dreams and What They Mean

Dreams and What They MeanDreams and What They Mean: Facts, Trivia, and Quizzes (Mind Games) by Elsie Olson
Published by Lerner Publications on August 1st 2017

Goodreads

In the book, Dreams and What They Mean, Elsie Olsen explores the science and history of dreams. Readers begin with learning about the commonality of dreams throughout history. Then they present insightful questions with well supported historical answers. The sleep cycle is explained clearly in simple language. An elementary presentation about the psychology of dreams is given by introducing Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The meanings behind what and who we dream about are illustrated with comical factoids. There are also quizzes to make the reader more aware of their personal dream life.

The book is bright with fun illustrations and photos. There are threads for the reader to follow during practical application pages. More difficult words are in bold font to lead the reader to the glossary which is located at the back of the book. At the conclusion of the book, there is a list of prompts for the reader to create their own dream journal. This would be a fun class project for 3rd – 5th grades or could be used as a family activity.

This quality title will benefit the readers by helping them learn self-awareness. Both school and public libraries would benefit by adding this title to their collection.
