This nonfiction picture book picks up the reader and pulls them onto the path in a Malaysian rain forest. The writing style is different from other informational books; instead of illustrations or photos of the flora and fauna of the rainforest, Jenkins has chosen to take the reader on an ecotour. In conversational style, he asks the reader to accompany him to this lush setting and then using words and breathtaking illustrations from Vicky White, unfolds the mysteries an explorer might find in the rain forest. Most of this is done through black & white illustrations where the play between light and shadow is so well defined, readers will press their faces closer to ensure these are not photographs. There is also the treat of 4 full-color, full-page spreads that truly highlight how rich and magical a rain forest is.

Backmatter offers a guide to the animals mentioned in the book and found in the rain forest. Recommend to those who love animals and to art teachers.

This is the second collected volume of the popular Webtoon comic Hooky. It follows twins Dani and Dorian and their fight for the fair treatment of witches, while struggling with their parents and the romantic entanglements of their friends.

While there are too many characters and quick jumps from subplot to subplot for me to follow, the first volume of Hooky was successful and those invested in it will want to continue with this one.  The illustrations are rich and it’s appropriate for middle grade graphic novel fans.

When Judy Moody, who is way into Nancy Drew stories, bumps into a girl outside the library and finds out that she, too, is reading Nancy Drew, Judy learns that while the two don’t live in the same town, they do share a passion for solving mysteries. That girl, Mighty Fantaskey, invites Judy over to her house. When Judy arrives, she finds that Mighty lives in a spooky, old house straight out of a creepy mystery story, and she has to rub her mood ring, which always makes her feel better. When the two girls decide to explore the very creaky attic, and things that shouldn’t move, move, things go from possibly spooky to run-away-now scary! Back at home, Judy is sorry for running away and then feels worse when she realizes that she has lost her mood ring and must return to Mighty’s possibly-haunted house. Turns out, the “haunting” was a perfectly unscary little brother and, to the girls’ delight, there really is a mystery hidden in the floorboards of the attic: a secret message from a former resident who hid an original edition of book 1 of the Nancy Drew series. Judy and Mighty solve a mystery and have a cool, old book as a souvenir.

This series is perfect for emerging readers who are ready for chapter books but don’t want to feel overwhelmed. All of the books in the series present a problem that Judy must rely on friends and her own logical thinking to solve. They often offer small challenges or bits of humor and this book follows that formula. This title does stand alone though if your young readers enjoy it, all of the titles are worthwhile additions to a collection.

five-stars

As is the hallmark of Melissa Stewart, every detail is attended to in this nonfiction picture book about the types of animals that use tree holes. From the peek-a-book picture under the dust jacket to the endpapers showing the start of the day and the end of the day to the clear, well-written layered text, Stewart invites the reader to imagine “what would it be like to live inside a tree?” From there, the book offers different animals who use a tree hole for safety and refuge, an escape from the outside world. Each double-page spread features simple text for a read-aloud and added information about the animal featured for a more in-depth look at the topic. Also featured are wonderful illustrations by Amy Hevron rendered in acrylic and marker on wood; her earthy palette hits just the right tone for the text. The back matter provides more information about each animal mentioned in the book along with sources for further study.

Hand to the naturalist, the science teacher discussing adaptations in nature, and, ultimately, to the child who is willing to look a little deeper at something as common as a tree and see the possibilities.

This trickster tale is reminiscent of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. On the night of the first snowfall Granny warns Cora about Frindleswylde, a fae boy who brings the cold and comes to “snatch the storks” as well as people; everyone must be careful when they go out. The next day, when Granny goes out in the woods, Frindleswylde snatches the light from the lantern causing Granny to become lost. Cora follows Frindleswylde to another world which he says is the “land of ever ice”. Frindleswylde sets three “impossible tasks” for Cora to perform and she manages to complete them all to save her Granny. The authors of this book keep the story moving and keep the readers wondering what will happen. The mixed media illustrations give the story a fairytale feel. It is very wordy for a picture book and would be difficult to use as a read aloud but is an engaging story for older elementary readers. Recommended for grades 2-4.

Artist Rhiannon Giddens from the traditional African string band Carolina Chocolate Drops uses her platform to highlight a powerful piece of African American history. The powerful, spare poetry, spanning centuries of American history and originally written as a song to celebrate the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, is remarkable. Readers should scan the QR code and listen to Giddens and Yo Yo Ma sing the text for an enhanced experience:  https://www.rhiannongiddens.com/build-a-house. The vibrant illustrations by painter Monica Mikai complement the text. A good choice for Black History Month and a springboard for conversations about historical injustice.
