Advertised for ages 3-7

This flap book encourages youngsters to flip over either the top or bottom (or both) halves of the page to create a new dinosaur.   It then reveals the newly created dinosaur name, and its new unique characteristics.

I was not able to pronounce most of the new morphed names, and would have a hard time trying to fake it in a read aloud with children.  “What do you get if you cross an iguanodon and a diplodocus?  That would be an iguanodocus!”  WOW.  The concept is cute, and the publisher and author have released other similar Flip Flap books that I believe would be much easier to digest.  Flip Flap Dogs, Farm, Ocean, Safari, all seem like they might be easier to read and comprehend.

Steven Jenkins and Robin Page hit it out of the park again in this book about animal camouflage. There will be a two-page spread describing the type of environment some animals might hide in, with cut-paper illustrations of a hidden animal. The following two-page spread will show the animal, identify where it is in the picture, and give a little bit of information. There is also usually a scale illustration, but there isn’t an indication of whether it is to scale of an adult or child. Full body shots appear to be adults, but the hand shots seem to be ambiguous. The end of the book gives more information about each animal.

Patrons who love animal books or cut-paper illustrations will love this title. Best for ages 6-10.

Hello, Dolly! Is this a great collection of some of the most talented leading ladies to hit Broadway over the years. Sometimes the actress’s first name is used for the alphabet letter, sometimes the last name, and sometimes it’s a character that multiple women have played. (such as Dolly in Hello, Dolly!) One instance (Z), does take a letter from the middle of a name so we end with Liza Minnelli. I love Emmerich’s illustrations, which often use props and the most famous costumes from stage productions. There are two men mentioned, Bob Fosse and Stephen Sondheim. Part of me wishes they had stuck to only women, but I also appreciated the roles highlighted, so that’s a bit of a mixed bag.

This is likely not a book you will read during storytime to teach the alphabet, but would be better with older children who are interested in musical theater or by parents who want to share their love with their children. Short biographies of each featured performer are included at the end. The target audience is likely ages 7-12.

This book provides information about a collection of endangered animals from around the world. There is a more diverse representation of animals beyond the usual cute and cuddly mammals, including a beetle and a dragonfly. Each two page spread includes an illustration of the animal combined with maps of where they’re found and text about the animal. It includes cultural significance, historical facts, biological information, and a potential prognosis.I do wish there were actual images of the animals instead of illustrations, though the illustrations are well done. Each animal is also presented as a stamp, and the significance or rationale for this layout isn’t well explained. This book would be great for 3rd grade and up budding scientists or just those interested in learning more about endangered species.

I enjoyed this informative book on dinosaurs.  The layout is very professional, using graphs, charts, timelines and simple illustrations to show when dinosaurs lived, and what they may have looked like and how they may have behaved.

The text compares the special features of prehistoric dinosaurs to modern dinosaurs and common animals and humans of today.

This book will appeal to the scientific minds of youngsters, possibly middle grades 4-6.  It is advertised for grades 1-4, but I believe older children will better understand it and be rewarded by this unique way of exploring the lives of dinosaurs. It will be a valuable addition to a school classroom and library setting.

There are dinosaur facts, a glossary and bibliography in the back of the book.

Comic book layouts coupled with full page illustrations done in acrylic and gouache paint tell the story of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz.  As a child he was good at school, even skipping a grade, and loved sports as well. But after high school, he didn’t know what to do with himself since the only thing he ever wanted to do was draw.  He ended up getting drafted and served for years overseas. When he came back, that’s when his career really took off. He started to draw these big-headed child characters called Lil Folks. When a newspaper wanted to start running his strips every week, they renamed the strip Peanuts, a name Schulz never cared for.  Over his lifetime, Schulz created over 17,000 comic strips. The illustrations perfectly hail back to the era he grew up in. For a bonus, Orback placed Peanuts shoutouts in some of the art, which makes poring over the illustrations that much more interesting. Back matter includes an artist’s note, a list and descriptions of the Peanuts gang, places of interest to visit, sources, and notes.  Recommended for ages 5-9.

Kindness is…. This book is a wonderful tribute to kindness in many different forms. The text is short and simple and will keep the youngest kids engaged. The color illustrations are well detailed and add to the story — the first sentence makes no sense without the accompanying illustration. There is a widely diverse representation of people in the illustrations of this book but that isn’t the focus of the book. This is my favorite form of diversity in picture books — people just being people together in everyday life. I love books with a positive message about kindness, and this one hits the nail on the head. It’s best for Pre-K-2nd grade and would make a great read aloud. Pair with Kindness Makes Us Strong or The Kindness Book for an explosion of kindness. Recommended for Cream of the Crop.

“A refugee is a person just like you and me.” This is an important and timely book, and it handles the subject matter gracefully and at an appropriate level. The text is simple and clearly lays out what makes someone a refugee as well as providing some reasons for people fleeing their home country. The color illustrations are simple, easy to follow, and they support the story well. There is a wide diversity of people in this book, and it does a great job at showing the commonalities between refugees and the reader. There are supplemental pages with quotes from refugee children the author met while writing the book that will help kids relate even more. These are followed by short bios of some famous refugees. This is a great book for K-2nd graders and would be an excellent launching point for further discussion.

Winter and Collier join together for a biography of one of the greatest lawyers in recent history, Thurgood Marshall. From an early age, Marshall honed an ability to argue through discussions with his father who asked for evidence to back up his claims and his high school debate career. As a lawyer, Marshall is responsible for many of the civil rights victories of the 1950s and 1960s. Winter doesn’t hesitate to show that Marshall put his life on the line for these victories. Collier’s watercolor and collage illustrations illuminate the different parts of Marshall’s life and often show movement. A back page gives a bit longer overview of Marshall’s life.

The book will appeal to fans of Some Writer!: The Story of E. B. White by Melissa Sweet. It is a sparse biography about Dr. William Carlos Williams who created a new kind of poetry. He used ordinary words and images and did not follow rhythmic patterns. They didn’t even rhyme! It has lovely lush illustrations of the ordinary things Williams writes poems about. Fun to learn the back story about “the red wheelbarrow” and more information about an extraordinary man who wrote poems about ordinary things. I doubt kids will find it unless shared by their teachers.
