What a first book! Courtney has written a snuggle-book full of love and memories. A true connection between child and grandfather is evident within the text, as well as a deep connection to this lovely environment in Newfoundland. The author’s writing style adds to the degree of heartwarming reassurance this book provides. The attention to detail by illustrator Kloepper launches the book to a higher level. Quilters will appreciate all of the detailed patterns which integrate the story line and its location. While the Atlantic puffin is superb, all of the little reoccurring prints, lines, and shapes are fantastic.

Add this book to all public libraries and gift to early primary classroom collections. Even if a school is located inland the sentiments and illustrations will be appreciated by all in any primary media center. |

Author in question as Eric Carle has passed.

An attractive early reader with typical Eric Carle style and charming illustrations probably taken from previous works by Carle. The actual author is in question but the book offers a satisfying read for toddlers and pre-schoolers. The theme here is self-identification and absurdness. For the most part the characters are joyful, and curious. As in life, a little grouchy does make an appearance. The message is that children should celebrate themselves as they are.

Little Worm has a song stuck in his head with a repeated lyric “Shimmy shimmy, no-sashay.” He tries to find out who put the song in his head from owl, chipmunk, rabbit, and fox, each of which has their own version of an ear worm stuck in their head. The large, whimsical illustrations of dancing and singing animals add to the enjoyment. The repetition and actions make for a fun story. Readers may note that Little Worm’s father is his caretaker and is also the culprit of inflicting the ear worm. This book just begs to be read aloud at Story Time!

This picture book is a magical story about a little girl whose parents are ogres. When her parents disappear, one snatched away by a dragon and one in a bottle out to sea, Clementine is quite happy by herself until her aunt shows up to take care of her. The aunt is as bad as her parents, so Clementine paints the house with invisible paint and her aunt goes home. All is well once again until one day, an uninvited lion shows up. She is afraid of him but Clementine overcomes her fear and she and the lion learn to live together. Reminiscent of Roald Dahl and Pippi Longstocking in a picture book. I thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations of the wide-eyed, red-haired Clementine and her fashionable shocking pink dress or coonskin cap. The freeloading lion is also adorable. Hand this book to those free-spirited children who will find this tale delightful. Definitely chuckle-worthy!

“Celebrated poets Ted Kooser and Connie Wanek, along with illustrator Richard Jones, invite you to let your imagination run wild and celebrate unique visions.” The poems in this book are framed by the four elements: fire, water, air, and earth. However, they are more about imagination and what ifs. Evocative metaphors, e.g. “We keep our fire in a playpen where we feed it, mostly leftovers from the woods,” and arresting imagery, e.g. “The TV remote means to change the world one channel at a time.” cause readers to pay attention. Beautiful illustrations from Richard Jones compliment the 27 poems each on a 2-page spread. An intriguing collection to share with budding poets that will likely cause the most reluctant poets to pause and think about everyday things. Recommend this book of poetry to everyone!

Toddlers will love the fun flaps that open on each page. Typical bright, colorful Lucy Cousins illustrations of sea creatures. Rhyming text is bouncy and fun to read, but I’m uncertain whether the vocabulary will appeal to this age group, for example, kelp beds, anglerfish. Many more animals are pictured but not mentioned in the text. If I had to choose between this book and “hooray for Fish” by the same author, I would choose the latter. However, toddlers will love to turn the flaps!

Murray, a wide-eyed, floppy eared puppy, is afraid of many things – rain, other dogs, loud noises, nightmares. Murray overcomes these fears by being brave. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all goes well. I like that about the book – even when you’re brave there might be setbacks. This book should be shared with shy, hesitant children who need some inspiration to overcome their own anxieties. Plenty of places for discussion about the pictures as they are quite expressive. A gem for those preschoolers who may need a little help about how to be brave.

Two houses stand side-by-side, one is home to a dog and the other to a young girl, with a fence dividing them. The lonely girl notices the lonely dog on the other side of the fence and begins to bring him snacks and read to him through the slats. I wanted to love this picture book as it had so many nice things about it, but I was disturbed by the abandoned dog left outside both day and night for over a year. Why would someone do that? Despite that concern, the book has a powerful message about sharing of stories with others. The vibrant illustrations are filled with emotion. A book to share with young readers who also love stories.

With the phrase “space-time” in the title, any inquisitive person will want to learn about Einstein’s theory about hearing ripples in space-time and the serendipitous event that allowed a scientist and her team to prove his theory. The friendly watercolor and digital media illustrations in this picture book may make Einstein a white haired and mustached gentleman before he actually looked that way, but they definitely make him identifiable in the book. When Einstein first presents his theory, it is to a row of male scientists. The story then introduces Gabriela (Gaby) González. When Gaby is studying and teaming up with scientists, the illustrations show a much more diverse collection of people. As a biography, the book is not overlong or in-depth, but its brevity may help reach the younger person who, like Gaby, could be wondering “what secrets lay beyond the stars.” Four pages of end notes include information about Einstein, Gaby, LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory), an author’s note, timeline, glossary, and sources.

Fans of the character Biscuit will, of course, want another story featuring the cute yellow puppy. This story is in the I Can Read! Level 1 beginner reader style with short sentences and familiar words. In this colorfully illustrated story, the setting is a community garden, so raised beds with flowers and vegetables abound. Accidents can happen, but in Biscuit’s world lemons are always turned to lemonade, so for example, to trip over the bird seed helps feed the birds and a shake after running through the sprinkler helps water the plants. With a positive feel-good attitude, this is a nice story, and with many communities and schools planning and opening gardens, it is a story that uses the shared garden setting.
