This book sneakily teaches us about mindfulness very successfully, as Digger begins to notice the world around him in a way he hadn’t before. The illustrations are as colorful and joyful as the subject matter. This is an easy purchase for any collection, trucks and mindfulness? Something for everyone.

Genres: Realistic Fiction
Format: Picture Book Fiction

four-stars

Author Krans and illustrator Bui have teamed up together to create a touching story of bravery, hope, and the importance of family. Drawing from both of their own childhood experiences, the story feels truly authentic in both words and visuals. A little girl named Mai and her Mom are sad when the father leaves their village in Vietnam to find the family a new home. They eventually also leave their village in hopes of reuniting with their father who has made it to America. The trip is challenging and the two overcome many obstacles but are fortunate to encounter the kindness of many on their way.

The illustrations are soft and warm with a lovely palette of earth-tone shades. The characters come to life with movement and facial expressions depicted with minimal strokes. The ending is rewarding with a heartfelt reunion in America with a barely recognizable Dad (new mustache). Both the author and illustrator provide notes that provide additional information on the time period and personal stories that add a great deal to the book. A strong addition to both a public and school library. A powerful story for children ages four to 8 that will bring awareness of what some people have gone through to come to America.

A crocodile playing a snare drum, a big brown bear with a bass, and a weasel with a banjo form a traveling band to play for the other animals in the woods. From spring to fall, they always attract an eager crowd. But when winter comes, the animals in the audience go off to bed and the band searches for a new stage in town. At winter’s end, the band is exhausted so they return to the woods to sleep.

Catchy rhyming text:  “Snap went the croc on the little snare drum. / Poom poom, the big, brown bear thumped with his thumb. / Jingle, jangle, strummed the weasel, all steady and strong. / Snap-poom-jingle-jangle went the animal song.” Colorful, comical illustrations will make it a fun read for story time. There is a musical score at the back of the book and readers can listen to the “free accompanying song and read-along” at https://jontyhowley.com/shop/theanimalsong-songandstory

Book 10 in the Uni the Unicorn series.  Saccharinely sweet and predictable. The unnamed little girl who lost her tooth has long blond hair and light skin. The overwrought tooth fairy has dark skin and black curly hair. Uni saves the day by chauffeuring the Tooth Fairy through her night deliveries. This reviewer wonders if Rosenthal wrote all these books before she died in 2017. Young unicorn-obsessed readers will love it.

Wynter’s spare, verse-like text tells the story of a pecan tree, planted by Nell, in shifting timelines from the past (Nell planting the tree) to the present (Nell’s grandchildren enjoying its mature shade and fruit). Miyares’ gorgeous illustrations use pen and ink, gouache, and collage to fill each page with color and space, evoking a warm Southern afternoon in changing light. All characters are Black. Notes from both the author and illustrator at the end of the book discuss how personal this story is for them, growing up surrounded by family pecan trees – experiences which certainly played a large role in the development of this warm, beautiful story that will no doubt be popular with parents and children alike, and maybe inspire them to plant a tree of their own!

Chloe, her smaller brother, and her parents prepare for the annual Lunar New Year celebration with Taiwanese traditions taking place on the night of the reunion dinner: sweeping out the old, new shoes, good-luck oranges, turnip cake, good-luck fish, fortune cake, red envelopes, and remembering those who have died. But it also incorporates an American dish of apple pie representing two cultures. There is a recipe for Fortune Cake in the back; readers need rice flour (not glutinous rice flour) and a steamer in order to make them.

An uncle with red hair and beard are part of this family reunion. There are many references to a beloved grandmother (A-má), for whom the hot pot is made, but she is only present in the family photos. Add to any collection where Lunar New Year books are popular or if there is a need to build up cultural holiday books. This is a loving book to add to the collection.
